Costa Rica marlin charter boat

Costa Rica sits along deep underwater trenches, strong currents, and nutrient-rich waters that create perfect feeding zones for marlin. Add in world-class captains, tournament-grade boats, and warm tropical weather, and you get one of the best marlin fisheries on the planet.

What Makes Marlin Fishing in Costa Rica So Special

Marlin in Costa Rica are not rare or seasonal surprises. They are a regular part of the offshore experience, especially during the peak months. Blue marlin roam the deep water near seamounts and current edges, black marlin hunt near reefs and structure, and striped marlin show up during the cooler dry-season months. Many captains release hundreds of marlin each year thanks to consistent action in offshore waters.

You also have the option to fish the legendary FADs and seamounts, where marlin numbers can be unreal. These multi-day trips offer some of the highest blue marlin encounter rates in the world and are a top choice for anglers who want true big-game action.

Best Time for Marlin Fishing in Costa Rica

You can catch marlin year-round, but some months stand above the rest.

Blue Marlin
Best from May to October. Strong numbers around offshore rips, warm currents, and the FADs. These are the most common and the most dependable marlin species in Costa Rica.

Black Marlin
Peaks from July to September, especially near reefs, drop-offs, and heavy structure. These fish are larger and known for powerful, vertical fights.

Striped Marlin
The most common time is from December to April during the dry season. Often mixed with sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna.

Costa Rica is one of the few places where all three species can be caught in the same day.

How We Target Marlin in Costa Rica

Captains use a mix of proven techniques, depending on conditions, water temperature, and target species.

Trolling
The most common method. Teasers, squid chains, and rigged ballyhoo bring marlin into the spread for clean hook-ups.

Live Bait
Especially effective for black marlin near reefs and current edges. Large bonito and small tuna are ideal baits.

Pitch Bait
Tournament-style fishing where the crew teases marlin to the boat and the angler pitches a rigged bait for an explosive strike.

FAD and Seamount Fishing
The pinnacle of marlin fishing in Costa Rica. These overnight trips can deliver double-digit blue marlin releases and non-stop action.
