Fishing Options
Compare offshore, inshore, bottom fishing, FAD expeditions, freshwater trips and Caribbean tarpon adventures—then choose the experience that fits your goals.
Find the right experience
Costa Rica offers much more than one kind of fishing trip.
The best option depends on where you are staying, the species you want to target, the anglers in your group and how much time you want to spend on the water. Serious billfish anglers may prefer a full offshore day or multi-day FAD expedition, while families often enjoy the variety and shorter runs of an inshore charter.
Our local team can match your group with a suitable destination, boat and captain instead of sending you a generic list.

Offshore and FAD fishing
For sailfish, marlin and big yellowfin tuna.
Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is known for productive bluewater fishing. Offshore charters target billfish and fast-moving pelagic species, while specialized FAD trips extend the range and time on the water for anglers focused on marlin.
Conservation: Responsible crews release billfish and other protected gamefish while edible species may be kept when legal and appropriate.

Planning questions
Costa Rica fishing options FAQ
Is offshore or inshore fishing better for first-time anglers?
Inshore fishing is often the easiest introduction because runs can be shorter and the trip can be adapted to families. Offshore fishing is a better choice when sailfish, marlin, tuna or mahi-mahi are the priority.
Can children join a Costa Rica fishing charter?
Yes. Inshore and bottom-fishing trips are frequently recommended for families. Share the children’s ages so the team can suggest a comfortable boat and appropriate trip length.
What is FAD fishing?
FAD fishing targets fish aggregating devices and seamounts far offshore. These specialized expeditions generally require an overnight or multi-day boat and are designed for serious anglers, particularly those targeting marlin.
Can we combine inshore and offshore fishing?
Sometimes. A full-day charter may allow the captain to adjust based on conditions and the bite, but covering both areas can reduce fishing time. Two separate days usually provide a better experience when both styles are important.
What information should I send for a recommendation?
Provide your fishing date, hotel or destination, number of anglers, experience level, preferred trip length and target species. If you are unsure about species, tell us whether your priority is action, trophy fish, family fun or fish for dinner.
What is normally included?
Most private charters include the captain and mate, fishing equipment, tackle, bait, ice and drinks. Full-day trips commonly add fruit, snacks and lunch. Exact inclusions vary by boat and will be confirmed before booking.
