Why fish Golfito?

A protected gulf beside powerful Pacific water.

Golfito fishing charters depart from Costa Rica’s Southern Zone, where calm gulf waters open toward deep offshore grounds and a rugged coastline creates productive inshore habitat. Anglers can target marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna and dorado offshore, or fish closer to land for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook, jacks and grouper.

The region feels more remote and less crowded than many better-known ports. That makes Golfito a strong choice for serious anglers, families seeking comfortable inshore water and groups planning several fishing days.

Experienced Golfito captains

Local knowledge matters in remote water.

Golfito is closely associated with Captain Bobby McGuinness, whose decades of experience, billfish work and familiarity with the Southern Pacific have earned international recognition. The local McGuinness fishing tradition also includes Captain Donald McGuinness.

Rather than promising a particular captain before availability is confirmed, Fishing Costa Rica checks your dates, goals and group requirements and recommends the most suitable available Golfito charter.

  • Knowledge of currents, bait movement and seasonal changes
  • Offshore experience with teasers, trolling, live bait and tuna schools
  • Inshore understanding of tides, river mouths and rocky structure
  • Trip recommendations based on your actual fishing priorities

Golfito charter FAQs

Questions before you book.

Is Golfito better for offshore or inshore fishing?

Golfito is strong for both. Offshore trips target billfish, tuna and dorado, while protected inshore waters produce roosterfish, snapper, snook, jacks and grouper.

Should I book a full day?

A full day is strongly recommended for offshore fishing because it gives the captain more time to locate productive water. Half-day trips work best for inshore fishing close to the gulf.

Can families fish in Golfito?

Yes. The protected gulf can make inshore departures comfortable, and the trip can be adjusted for children, first-time anglers or groups that prefer steady action near shore.

Can I request Captain Bobby or Captain Donald McGuinness?

You may request a preferred captain, but availability must be confirmed for your exact date. We will explain the available boats and captain options before you reserve.

What species are available year-round?

Roosterfish, snapper and several offshore species may be encountered throughout the year, but abundance changes with bait, currents, weather and seasonal movement.

What should I bring?

Bring sun protection, polarized sunglasses, a light rain layer, comfortable clothing and any required medication. We confirm fishing-license and boat-specific requirements before departure.
