Costa Rica’s Caribbean fishery

A completely different fishing experience.

Tortuguero fishing is built around tidal rivers, river mouths, coastal surf, lagoons and freshwater canals rather than Pacific blue water. Migrating bait attracts large tarpon, while protected waterways can produce snook, guapote, machaca, mojarra and other species.

The setting is part of the adventure: dense rainforest, tropical birds and wildlife surround the route to the fishing grounds. Because Tortuguero is remote and conditions change quickly, the best trips combine local guides with flexible multi-day planning.

Tarpon fishing

Power, jumps and demanding conditions.

Adult tarpon move between the Caribbean and the river system. Guides may troll plugs, drift or slow-troll live bait, and cast lures around river mouths, current edges and bait concentrations.

Hooking a tarpon is only the beginning. Their hard runs, violent headshakes and repeated jumps require steady pressure and careful boat handling. All tarpon are released.
