Pacific sailfish are known for brilliant color, high-speed runs and acrobatic jumps. They are targeted primarily with trolling spreads, teasers and natural baits, then released beside the boat.

When to fish
Best time for Sailfish in Costa Rica
Sailfish can be encountered throughout the year along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, but December through April is the most reliable peak for the Central Pacific.
May through August can still produce quality billfishing with fewer boats on the water. September and October are generally less consistent, although sailfish remain possible and marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi may contribute to the day.

Most sailfish charters depart early and run offshore to clean blue water. The crew sets a trolling spread and continuously adjusts bait, teasers and boat position while watching for birds, current lines and visible fish.

Every Sailfish should be released
Sailfish are protected gamefish and should remain in the water whenever possible. Responsible crews use circle hooks, appropriate tackle and careful boat-side handling to shorten the fight and support a strong release.
Marlin may be encountered in the same water, while yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo can add edible offshore catches. The trip remains focused on wild fishing conditions rather than guaranteed numbers.

What is the best season for Sailfish in Costa Rica?
December through April is the most consistent Central Pacific season. Sailfish remain possible throughout the year, with regional and daily differences.
Is Los Sueños or Quepos better for Sailfish?
Both are excellent Central Pacific departure areas. The better choice normally depends on your hotel, boat preference and availability rather than a major difference in fishing grounds.
Is a full-day trip necessary?
Yes. Sailfish are targeted offshore, and a full day provides more time to reach productive blue water and work the fishing grounds.
Can a beginner catch a Sailfish?
Yes. The captain and mate will explain the bite and coach you through the fight. Costa Rica is an excellent destination for a first billfish.
Can we bring a Sailfish onto the boat for a photograph?
Responsible crews keep sailfish in the water whenever possible. Photographs can be taken at the side of the boat before the fish is released.
